THE LEILA

– MAROC–

"The Leila" offers us a musical universe of its own where traditional styles from North Africa merge with progressive rock, creating a harmony between fragility and power

Originally from Oujda, Layla Chakir (aka 'THE LEILA') grew up in Eastern Morocco, a culturally rich region with diverse musical heritages such as Reggada, Aarfa, and other Berber styles, as well as Gharnati, Rai, not to mention Algerian Chaâbi. Despite growing up in a conservative environment, her passion for music from a young age led her to pursue her dream, recording her first single at just fifteen. The inevitable influence of this amalgamation of musical styles is evident in this very young artist, though it would become more pronounced in her future compositions.

Co-founder of the group 'Snitra' in 2015, she embarked on a concert tour with an artistic residency in Nouakchott, Mauritania, in 2017. Later, she moved from Oujda to Casablanca, where the music scene thrives, and encountered renowned musicians who shared their experiences and knowledge. Now established in the always vibrant and cosmopolitan Casablanca, and true to herself, she begins a new musical adventure under the current name 'The Leila'. This project is the culmination of a challenging journey that translates into an intriguing musical universe accessible to all, where Maghreb musical tradition blends exceptionally with rock.

'The Leila' is undoubtedly one of the new raising star of Moroccan music for the press and specialized critics. Despite her youth, she has already graced stages in France, Spain, Belgium, Mauritania, Algeria, and, of course, her native Morocco, emerging as one of the revelations of the last edition of the Visa For Music Festival held in Rabat.
